Report shows women are underrepresented in the media worldwide.

‘A recent report by the Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) has found that women are underrepresented in the media worldwide, in terms of their presence as subjects, reporters, and presenters. The Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies (MIGS), which conducted the Cyprus survey, revealed that men receive close to 85% exposure in the media, reflecting a large ‘gender gap’ in the media. The GMMP report has also elicited a call from the General Secretary of the International Federation of Journalists, Aidan White, for a new debate in newrooms around the world about the need gender-sensitive reporting. The IFJ has also called on Unions to respond to the findings of the report, and to promote a debate around the strengthening of journalistic values.

The Cyprus Community Media Centre opposes ‘all forms of of discrimination, including gender, and considers this report a timely reminder to reaffirm its commitment to media pluralism and diversity’.
